As of 4/17/25, the Chemistry Placement Exam will be administered in the first lab meeting of the CHEM 400 classes for Summer 2025 and Fall 2025.

We are working on getting more opportunities for students to take the placement exam.

The Chemistry Placement Exam is a test of the material from a high school chemistry class. Therefore, it covers all of the material in a high school chemistry class, which generally includes an introduction to many of the topics in a General Chemistry class.  

The best way to prepare yourself for CHEM 400 is to take CHEM 300. For a student with a significant chemistry background, the SCC Chemistry Department has validated the Chemistry Placement Exam as a means to assess whether a student has the necessary background to take and pass CHEM 400. The Chemistry Placement Exam is meant for students with significant chemistry backgrounds. 

A passing score on the Chemistry Placement Exam is 20/44. 

There are no other planned offerings of the Chemistry Placement Exam at this time. Check back as we make plans for future administrations of the Chemistry Placement Exam.

As of 1/16/25, the Chemistry Placement Exam will be administered in the first lab meeting of the CHEM 400 classes for Spring 2025- except for Monday CHEM 400 labs. Students enrolled in Monday CHEM 400 labs during the Spring 2025 semester need to plan to take the Chemistry Placement Exam in one of the other CHEM 400 lab sections. Please email the instructor of the lab section for which you'd like to take the Chemistry Placement Exam to ask if they have space.

As of 11/27/24, this web page has the latest information available about taking the Chemistry Placement Exam at Sacramento City College (SCC). 

Passing the Chemistry Placement Exam within the past year is one way to meet the chemistry prerequisite for CHEM 400 at SCC. The other way to meet the chemistry prerequisite at SCC is to pass CHEM 300 within the past year at either SCC or CRC. Alternatively, students may pass CHEM 310 at ARC. Students having taken CHEM 305 or any other chemistry course must pass the  Chemistry Placement Exam within one year prior to enrollment in CHEM 400.

Please bring a nonprogrammable scientific calculator and a number 2 pencil to take the placement exam.
