This is a series of videos about reading a journal article, a skill that I first learned in my first few weeks of graduate school. Keep a couple of things in mind: you wouldn't be reading it if you knew everything in the article, so take the time to take notes, look up new terms, talk things out. My advisor and I would take turns reading sentences of paragraphs of articles, stopping to discuss each line or paragraph. The journal article we are reading is "Microemulsions of Nonionic Surfactant withWater and Various Homologous Esters: Preparation, Phase Transitions, Physical Property Measurements, and Application for Extraction of Tricyclic Antidepressant Drugs from Aqueous Media from the journal Nanomaterials." The best way to use this video is to have access to a version of the article that you can write on- either print-out or on a tablet. As of 21 February 2026, this article was available to the public for download as a PDF.
More to come!
